every time my phone rings, I have a very firm conviction that the person on the other end is just waiting for me to pick up. This obvious self-preoccupation makes me feel so ashamed that I seldom answer, if only to prove to myself and the person on the other end that I do not actually consider myself so important.

I’m always convinced you WON’T pick up because you think you’re too good for me. Consequently, my view of you as a self-absorbed monster is confirmed, time and time again.
